About the Job

EMI/EMC Test Engineer (MIL-STD-461)

Vertical Laboratories is looking for an EMI/EMC Test Engineer with hands-on MIL-STD-461 test experience.

Job Description:
Our environmental simulation laboratory is searching for a competent and experienced EMI/EMC Test Engineer with at least 5 years of experience, including direct hands-on MIL-STD-461 testing, to join our team. In this role, the successful applicant will design and fabricate custom test setups per customer requirements as well as perform testing to published standards. They will oversee all phases of development, testing, and final reporting. As an accredited laboratory, we also need an engineer who can stand behind their work in front of an assessor: you will be the technical voice for EMI/EMC during ISO/IEC 17025 audits and customer audits. This is an exciting opportunity to join a test laboratory and be a part of challenging testing projects from start to finish. If you have a strong background in MIL-STD-461 testing, we encourage you to apply.

At Vertical Labs we take on the challenges that other Labs don’t. We work in a highly challenging, and highly rewarding atmosphere. This is the job you have been looking for.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform MIL-STD-461 testing across conducted emissions, conducted susceptibility, radiated emissions, and radiated susceptibility.
  • Perform testing to standards such as MIL-STD-461, RTCA/DO-160, MIL-STD-810, EIA-364-66, MIL-DTL-38999, MIL-DTL-24308.
  • Build and verify EMI test setups: antennas, LISNs, injection and E-field probes, amplifiers, and ground planes. Perform system checks and ambient measurements, and recognize when a measurement is being driven by the setup rather than the EUT.
  • Set up and perform EMI tests and support customers during troubleshooting in the event of a test failure.
  • Serve as the EMI/EMC technical representative during ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation assessments, surveillance audits, and customer and third-party audits. Walk assessors through test methods, setups, equipment, data, and records, and answer technical questions directly and confidently.
  • Write and maintain EMI/EMC test procedures and work instructions that meet ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, and respond to findings and corrective actions within required timeframes.
  • Repair test equipment (preamp, amplifier, and power supplies).
  • Maintain a test schedule in order to meet project goals per customer requirements.
  • Research these test standards and create test plans based on the needs of our customers.
  • Prepare electrical equipment for testing such as DMM, HiPot Tester, Power supplies, current sensors, force gauges, amplifiers, oscilloscope, frequency generator, and spectrum analyzer.
  • Collaborate with Quality Management Staff in order to ensure all company policies and procedures are implemented during testing, and support expansion of our accredited scope.
  • Stay current with best practices and investigate new methods of testing.

Requirements:
  • At least 5 years of hands-on EMI/EMC testing experience, including direct MIL-STD-461 test experience. This is a firm requirement.
  • Working knowledge of the MIL-STD-461 method requirements, limits, and verification/system-check provisions, and the ability to work directly from the standard.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent technical work to auditors and assessors. You must be comfortable being questioned on your methods, data, and records by an ISO/IEC 17025 assessor or a customer auditor, and able to explain and defend your technical decisions in person.
  • Working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 requirements as they apply to test methods, records, traceability, and equipment calibration.
  • Experience working in a shielded or anechoic chamber environment.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. A keen eye for detail and a results-driven approach.
  • Excellent report and technical document writing skills.
  • Impeccable communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent skills with Windows Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Visio, and Outlook – must be able to chart and graph trends, create metrics, and track and monitor data.
  • Strong root cause and trend analysis reporting skills.
  • Excellent math abilities and working knowledge of data analysis and statistical methods.
  • Ability to work independently to create and deliver testing results.
  • Working knowledge of Tile software or equivalent.
  • iNARTE or Exemplar Global EMC certification is a plus.
  • Prior experience supporting A2LA assessments or measurement uncertainty budgets is a plus.
